Convert WOFF2 to TTF
FileReshape's WOFF2 to TTF converter unpacks WOFF2 and WOFF web fonts into the font file inside them, a TTF you can install on Windows, macOS and Linux or use in design programs. It runs in your browser and the fonts are not uploaded. Fonts with PostScript outlines come out as OTF, and a web font's licence still applies.
Did a file not convert correctly? E-mail [email protected], ideally with a small sample file, and it will be fixed.
Key facts
- Input: WOFF2 web font (.woff2). Output: TrueType font (.ttf).
- Your files are not uploaded: the work is done in your browser, on your own device.
- File size: fonts up to 50 MB.
- Needs a current browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari) on a computer, tablet or phone; nothing to install.
- Free to use, with no sign-up.
Why convert WOFF2 to TTF
Web fonts come as .woff2 or .woff files, which browsers read but operating systems do not install. A WOFF2 is a compressed wrapper around an ordinary TrueType or OpenType font, so the original font can be taken out again without any loss. This tool does that in your browser with Google's woff2 library for WOFF2, and with zlib for the older WOFF format. You get the font file exactly as it was before it was packed: the same glyphs, kerning, ligatures, hinting and names, ready to install by double-clicking it or to use in Word, Figma, Photoshop or a print layout. Drop several files at once, for example the regular, bold and italic of a family, and they come back in one ZIP.
How to convert WOFF2 to TTF
- Drop one or more .woff2 or .woff files in the box, or click to choose them.
- Check the font names and glyph counts in the list.
- Click Convert to TTF. One font downloads as a .ttf file; several come as a ZIP. Double-click a file to install it.
What to know about unpacking web fonts
Some web fonts become OTF
A WOFF2 can hold a font with TrueType outlines or one with PostScript (CFF) outlines. The first becomes a .ttf; the second is saved as an .otf, because that is what it is. OTF installs and works like TTF on Windows, macOS and Linux. If a program insists on .ttf, convert the .otf with the OTF to TTF tool.
Web fonts are often subsets
Websites and font services often strip a web font down to the characters a page uses, or split it into several files by alphabet. The TTF then holds only those characters, and missing letters show in a fallback font. The list shows the glyph count of each file, so a very small number is a sign of a subset.
The licence still applies
Unpacking a web font does not give you a desktop licence for it. Fonts under the SIL Open Font License, such as most Google Fonts, may be installed and used freely. Commercial web fonts usually may not be installed on a computer without a desktop licence.
Variable fonts
A variable font holds a whole range of weights or widths in one file. It stays a variable font as TTF; current versions of Windows, macOS and design programs show its styles, while some older programs only offer the default style.
About the formats
WOFF2 web font
WOFF2 (Web Open Font Format 2.0) is a compressed package for TrueType and OpenType fonts made for websites. It became a W3C Recommendation in 2018 and uses Brotli compression plus a special encoding of the glyph data, which makes it about 30 % smaller than WOFF 1.0. Every current browser supports it.
- Used in CSS with @font-face and src: url(font.woff2) format('woff2').
- Operating systems do not install WOFF2 files; convert them to TTF or OTF first.
- The font inside is unchanged, so a WOFF2 can be turned back into the original TTF or OTF.
TrueType font
TrueType (.ttf) is the font format Apple and Microsoft introduced in 1991. Its glyphs are drawn with quadratic curves and it can carry detailed hinting instructions for sharp text at small sizes on screen. Every operating system, office suite and design program installs and uses TTF fonts.
- Installs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS without extra software.
- Since OpenType (1996) a .ttf file can hold the same OpenType features as an .otf: ligatures, kerning, small caps.
- Unlike web fonts, a TTF is not compressed, so it is usually two to three times the size of the WOFF2 version.
Frequently asked questions
Are my fonts uploaded?
No. The web fonts are unpacked by your browser on your own device, and nothing is sent to a server.
Is the TTF identical to the original font?
Yes, for WOFF2 and WOFF files made from a normal font. Both formats are lossless packages, so the font tables come out exactly as they were packed.
Can I convert a WOFF (version 1) file?
Yes. Drop .woff files in the same box. They are unpacked with zlib instead of Brotli, with the same result: the original TTF or OTF.
How do I install the font?
On Windows, right-click the .ttf and choose Install. On a Mac, double-click it and click Install Font in Font Book. On Linux, copy it to ~/.local/share/fonts.
