Archive tools
Open an archive someone sent you, take out the one file you need, or pack a folder into a ZIP before you send it. The archive tools run in your browser tab, so you do not need to install WinRAR or 7-Zip, and the files inside never pass through a server. They also work on Chromebooks and on work computers where you cannot install software.
Formats
Which tool do I need?
- You received a ZIP file and want to see or use what is inside
- Unzip lists every file with its folder and size. Save a single file, or extract everything into a folder in Chrome and Edge. Password-protected ZIPs open if you know the password. Unzip files online
- You downloaded a RAR or 7z file and your computer cannot open it
- The RAR and 7z extractors unpack the archive in your browser and can turn it into a ZIP, which every computer and phone opens. Archives protected with a password, and multi-part archives, need a desktop app such as 7-Zip. RAR extractor · Open 7z files online
- You need to send many files or a whole folder as one file
- Create ZIP packs files and folders into one ZIP with the folder structure kept. Documents and text shrink; photos and videos stay about the same size because they are compressed already. Create a ZIP file
ZIP, RAR or 7z?
ZIP is the format every system opens without help, so it is the safe choice for anything you send to other people. RAR and 7z usually pack files tighter, especially many similar files, but the receiver needs an app to open them on most computers. Turning a RAR or 7z into a ZIP makes the contents easy to pass on.
Archives and safety
An archive can hide a program inside an innocent-looking folder. Look at the file list before you extract everything, and be careful with .exe, .scr, .js or .vbs files you did not expect. File names that try to write outside the chosen folder, such as ../ paths, are cleaned up before anything is saved.
