7z converters
7z is the archive format of 7-Zip, the free archiver Igor Pavlov released in 1999. With LZMA and LZMA2 compression it usually makes smaller archives than ZIP. Windows 11 can open 7z files since 2023; on a Mac they need an app such as Keka or The Unarchiver.

What to know about 7z
- LZMA2 compression with a large dictionary is what makes 7z archives small.
- Archives are solid by default: files are compressed together, which saves space but makes reading a single file slower.
- A password encrypts the contents with AES-256, and can optionally hide the file names too.
- The format is open: 7-Zip is free software and its LZMA code is in the public domain.
