Open 7z files online

FileReshape's 7z extractor opens 7-Zip archives in your browser, lists the files inside and saves one file, all files into a folder, or everything as one ZIP. The 7z file is not uploaded. Password-protected 7z archives cannot be decrypted here, split archives (.7z.001, .7z.002) must be joined first, and archives above about 1.5 GB are too large for the browser.

Did a file not convert correctly? E-mail [email protected], ideally with a small sample file, and it will be fixed.

Key facts

Why open a 7z file online

7-Zip makes some of the smallest archives there are, which is why software, drivers, emulator files and data exports are often shared as .7z. A Mac, a Chromebook, an older Windows PC or a locked-down work laptop usually cannot open them without installing an app first. This 7z extractor unpacks the archive in your browser tab with libarchive, the open-source library behind many archive tools. Drop the .7z file to see every file with its folder and size, save just the file you need, or extract everything into a folder. If you want to send the contents to someone, turn the 7z into a ZIP, which opens on any computer or phone without extra software. Nothing leaves your device.

How to extract a 7z file

  1. Drop the .7z file in the box, or click to choose it.
  2. Look through the list; click Download next to a file to save only that one.
  3. Choose how to save everything (a folder, one ZIP file or separate downloads) and click Extract all files.

What to know about 7z files

Encrypted 7z archives

7-Zip protects archives with AES-256 and can hide the file names as well. The reader used here cannot decrypt 7z archives, so a protected file gives a clear message. Open it with 7-Zip on Windows, or Keka or The Unarchiver on a Mac, and enter the password there.

Split 7z files

7-Zip can split an archive into volumes named .7z.001, .7z.002 and so on. Join them first (on Windows with "copy /b file.7z.001 + file.7z.002 file.7z", on Mac and Linux with "cat file.7z.0* > file.7z"), then open the joined file here.

Solid compression

7z archives are solid by default: the files are compressed together. To get one file out, the files before it have to be unpacked too, so the first file takes as long as the whole archive; after that all files are ready straight away.

Memory and size

The archive is read into the browser's memory, and the unpacked files need room too. That works up to about 1.5 GB on a computer. LZMA2 archives often unpack to several times their size, so a 1 GB archive holding 5 GB of data is better opened with a desktop app.

About the formats

7z

7z is the archive format of 7-Zip, the free archiver Igor Pavlov released in 1999. With LZMA and LZMA2 compression it usually makes smaller archives than ZIP. Windows 11 can open 7z files since 2023; on a Mac they need an app such as Keka or The Unarchiver.

  • LZMA2 compression with a large dictionary is what makes 7z archives small.
  • Archives are solid by default: files are compressed together, which saves space but makes reading a single file slower.
  • A password encrypts the contents with AES-256, and can optionally hide the file names too.
  • The format is open: 7-Zip is free software and its LZMA code is in the public domain.

ZIP

ZIP is the most widely used archive format. Phil Katz published it with PKZIP in 1989, and Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android can all open ZIP files without extra software. One ZIP file holds many files and folders, each compressed on its own, which is why it is used for email attachments, downloads and backups.

  • Each file is compressed separately, usually with Deflate, so one file can be taken out without unpacking the rest.
  • The list of files sits at the end of the ZIP, so an interrupted download cannot be opened.
  • A password can protect the contents with ZipCrypto (weak) or AES-256, but the file names stay readable.
  • Without the ZIP64 extension a ZIP holds at most 65,535 files and 4 GB.
  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx), EPUB e-books and Android apps are ZIP files inside.

Frequently asked questions

Is my 7z file uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device; the files never reach a server.

Which compression methods are supported?

LZMA and LZMA2, which 7-Zip uses by default, as well as BZip2, Deflate, PPMd and the BCJ filters 7-Zip uses for programs.

Can I convert 7z to ZIP?

Yes. Choose "As one ZIP file" and click Extract all files. The ZIP keeps the folders and opens on any computer or phone.

Can I make a 7z file here?

No, but you can pack files and folders into a ZIP file in your browser, which every system opens without extra apps.
