Rotate and flip images

This free tool turns JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF images 90° to the right, 90° to the left or 180°, and can flip them horizontally or vertically, for many images at once. The images are turned in your browser and are not uploaded. The pixels are really turned, so the result looks the same in every program, a JPG is saved again at 92 % quality, and camera details are removed.

Key facts

Why rotate an image

A scan fed into the scanner the wrong way, a photo of a whiteboard taken sideways, or a picture that looks fine on the phone but lies on its side once it is uploaded to a website: all of these need turning. Here you choose 90° to the right, 90° to the left or 180°, and you can also mirror the image, left to right or top to bottom, for example to undo the mirror effect of a selfie camera or to fix a scan of a transparency. The thumbnails show the result before you save, and you can turn a whole batch of images the same way in one go; several images come back in a zip. Everything runs in your browser, so your photos stay on your device.

How to rotate an image

  1. Drop your images in the box, or click to choose them. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF are accepted.
  2. Choose how to turn them, and tick a flip if you want a mirror image. The thumbnails show the result.
  3. Click Rotate images and download the image, or a zip with all of them.

What to know about rotating

Why a photo can be sideways in one program and not in another

Phones save the picture the way the sensor saw it and add an orientation tag that says how to turn it. Most phones, browsers and photo apps follow the tag; some websites, older Windows programs and print services ignore it, so the photo shows on its side there. This tool first turns the photo by its tag and then really turns the pixels, so the saved copy looks the same everywhere.

Saving a photo upright without turning it

If a photo only looks wrong in some places, choose Do not turn and leave both flips off. The copy is saved exactly as you see it in the thumbnail, upright in every program, without depending on the tag.

Quality

PNG and lossless images are turned without any loss. A JPG has to be saved again after turning, which this tool does at 92 % quality, a level that is hard to tell apart from the original; repeating it many times on the same file is still best avoided.

Which format comes out

JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG with its transparency, and WebP stays WebP in Chrome, Edge and Firefox; Safari cannot write WebP, so there a WebP becomes a PNG and the list says so. GIF and BMP become PNG, with only the first frame of an animated GIF, and AVIF becomes JPG.

Camera details are not kept

The turned copy contains only the picture. The date, camera model and GPS position stored in a phone photo are not copied, and neither is the orientation tag, which is no longer needed.

About the formats

JPG

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely used image format for photos, supported by every camera, phone, browser and image editor. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small at a small cost in quality.

  • Best for photos; text and sharp lines can get blurry edges.
  • No transparency: transparent areas become a solid colour.
  • The quality setting trades file size against detail.

PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format from 1996 and the usual format for screenshots, logos, diagrams and images with transparency. Every pixel is stored exactly, so text and sharp edges stay crisp.

  • Lossless: saving again never reduces quality.
  • Supports full transparency (an alpha channel).
  • Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. The images are turned by your browser on your own device.

How do I rotate a picture 90 degrees?

Choose 90° clockwise (right) or 90° counter-clockwise (left), then click Rotate images. A landscape picture becomes portrait and the other way round, so width and height swap.

What is the difference between rotating and flipping?

Rotating turns the whole picture, the way you would turn a printed photo on a table. Flipping mirrors it, so text reads backwards and the left side ends up on the right.

Can I rotate many photos at once?

Yes. Add them all and choose the direction once; every image is turned the same way, and they are downloaded together as a zip named rotated_images.zip.

What are the new files called?

The original name with _rotated added, for example scan_rotated.jpg, or _flipped when you only mirror the image, so your originals are not overwritten.
