Convert PDF to PNG

Free, private and fast: everything runs in your browser and your PDF file is never uploaded.

PDF to PNG: why convert

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a page rendered to PNG keeps text, thin lines, charts and diagrams crisp, without the blurry halos that JPG compression adds around sharp edges. That makes PNG the better pick for slides, technical drawings, forms, documentation and anything you will crop or annotate later. Each page of your PDF is drawn by pdf.js, the PDF engine of Firefox, at the resolution you choose and saved as its own PNG file; several pages come in a zip, numbered in order. You can keep the white paper background, or make the empty parts of the page transparent, which helps when you place a logo or diagram from a PDF on a coloured slide.

How to convert PDF to PNG

  1. Drop your PDF in the box, or click to choose it.
  2. Choose the resolution and whether the background should be white or transparent.
  3. Click Convert to PNG and download the image, or the zip with one PNG per page.

What changes when you convert

How the transparent background really works

A PDF page has no background colour of its own; readers draw it on white. The white option gives you exactly what a reader shows. With the transparent option, only areas where the PDF draws nothing become see-through. Many documents, for example exports from Word or PowerPoint, paint the page with a white rectangle, and a scanned page is one opaque image, so those stay opaque either way.

Resolution and pixel size

An A4 page becomes about 596 × 842 pixels at 72 DPI, 1241 × 1754 at 150 DPI and 2481 × 3508 at 300 DPI; a US Letter page 1275 × 1650 at 150 DPI. Very large pages, such as posters at 300 DPI, are drawn at a lower resolution so the browser does not run out of memory, and the result message says so.

PNG files are larger than JPG for scans

For pages with text and flat colours, PNG files are often small. For scans and photos they are much larger than JPG, because PNG cannot throw any detail away. For a scanned document, PDF to JPG gives smaller files that look the same.

Text turns into pixels

The images show the text, but you cannot select, search or copy it any more, and links stop working. Filled-in form fields are drawn with their values.

Password-protected PDFs

A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be converted. Open it in your reader, enter the password and save a copy without the password first.

About the formats

PDF

PDF (Portable Document Format) was created by Adobe in 1993 and has been an ISO standard since 2008. A PDF looks the same on every device, which is why it is used for contracts, invoices, forms, manuals and scanned documents.

  • A page can hold text, vector graphics and images, each placed exactly.
  • Scanned documents are usually one image per page.
  • A PDF can be protected with a password that is needed to open or edit it.

PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format from 1996 and the usual format for screenshots, logos, diagrams and images with transparency. Every pixel is stored exactly, so text and sharp edges stay crisp.

  • Lossless: saving again never reduces quality.
  • Supports full transparency (an alpha channel).
  • Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Your browser renders the pages and creates the PNG files on your own device.

Which resolution should I pick?

150 DPI suits screens, slides and documents read on a phone. Pick 300 DPI for printing or for zooming into small print, and 72 DPI for small previews and thumbnails.

How are the PNG files named?

After the PDF with the page number, such as manual_page01.png and manual_page02.png, so they sort correctly in any folder.

Can I convert just one page?

Every page is converted. Delete the images you don't need, or first keep only the pages you want with the delete pages tool.
