Convert JPG to PNG
Free, private and fast: everything runs in your browser and your JPG files are never uploaded.
JPG to PNG: why convert
Some jobs need a PNG even when you start from a JPG photo: an app or game that only accepts PNG textures or icons, a design tool where you want to cut out the background, or an editing workflow in which the picture is saved again and again. JPG loses a little detail each time it is saved; a PNG copy does not, so it makes a stable working file. Be clear about what the conversion cannot do, though: it does not undo compression that already happened, and it does not make the background transparent by itself. Add your JPG files, click convert, and get a PNG for each one, as a single file or in a zip. Photos taken with a phone held upright are stored upright in the PNG, and all of it happens inside your browser.
How to convert JPG to PNG
- Drop your .jpg or .jpeg files in the box, or click to choose them.
- Check the list of images. There are no settings, because PNG is lossless.
- Click Convert to PNG and download the PNG, or a zip with all of them.
What changes when you convert
The quality stays the same
Every pixel of the JPG is copied exactly, including the blocky areas and halos that JPG compression left behind. The PNG looks identical to the JPG; it is not sharper or cleaner. What you gain is that further edits and saves no longer add new compression damage.
Expect a much bigger file
JPG was made for photos and throws away detail the eye barely notices. PNG keeps everything, and photos with grain, foliage or skies compress poorly without loss. The PNG is therefore usually several times larger than the JPG. For sharing a photo, the JPG is the better file.
No transparent background
A JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG is fully opaque, with the same white or coloured background as the photo. To make a background transparent, open the PNG in an editor and remove it there; the PNG can then store the transparency.
Phone photos are turned upright
Phones often save the pixels sideways and add an orientation tag, which some programs ignore. The converter applies the tag, so the PNG pixels are already the right way up everywhere.
Camera details and location are dropped
The date, the camera settings and any GPS position stored in the JPG's EXIF data are not written to the PNG. That is useful before you publish a photo, but keep the JPG if you need those details.
About the formats
JPG
JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely used image format for photos, supported by every camera, phone, browser and image editor. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small at a small cost in quality.
- Best for photos; text and sharp lines can get blurry edges.
- No transparency: transparent areas become a solid colour.
- The quality setting trades file size against detail.
PNG
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format from 1996 and the usual format for screenshots, logos, diagrams and images with transparency. Every pixel is stored exactly, so text and sharp edges stay crisp.
- Lossless: saving again never reduces quality.
- Supports full transparency (an alpha channel).
- Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your browser decodes each JPG and writes the PNG on your device. Nothing leaves your computer or phone.
Will converting to PNG improve my photo?
No. A lossless format preserves what is there; it cannot bring back detail that JPG compression removed. It only prevents further loss from future saves.
When does JPG to PNG make sense?
When software requires PNG, when you plan to edit the picture several times, or when you want to add transparency or sharp text and graphics on top of a photo in an editor.
Can I convert a whole folder?
Yes. Select all the files in the dialog or drag them in together. Each PNG is named after its JPG and you download them as one zip.
