Convert GeoPackage to GeoJSON

This converter turns every vector layer of a GeoPackage (.gpkg) into GeoJSON in WGS84 longitude and latitude for Leaflet, MapLibre or geojson.io, one .geojson per layer. The file is converted in your browser and is not uploaded. Field names are kept in full; tables without geometry are skipped.

Did a file not convert correctly? E-mail [email protected], ideally with a small sample file, and it will be fixed.

Key facts

GeoPackage to GeoJSON: why convert

GeoPackage is where GIS data lives: QGIS saves to it by default, ArcGIS Pro reads and writes it, and many agencies publish open data as .gpkg. Web maps and scripts want GeoJSON instead, a plain JSON text file in longitude and latitude that Leaflet, MapLibre, Mapbox, geojson.io, GitHub and most programming languages read without a GIS library. This page opens the GeoPackage in your browser with GDAL, the open-source library behind QGIS, reprojects each vector layer from its own coordinate system (a UTM zone, a national grid) to WGS84 and writes it as GeoJSON with every field and its full name. Unlike a shapefile, a GeoJSON file can hold points, lines and polygons together, so a layer that mixes geometry types stays one file. The GeoPackage never leaves your computer.

How to convert GeoPackage to GeoJSON

  1. Drop your .gpkg file in the box, or click to choose it.
  2. Check the layers on the map and the list of layers with their coordinate systems.
  3. Click Convert to GeoJSON and download the .geojson file, or a .zip with one file per layer.

What changes when you convert

Always WGS84 longitude and latitude

The GeoJSON standard (RFC 7946) allows only WGS84 longitude and latitude, and web maps expect it. Each layer is therefore reprojected from the coordinate system stored in the GeoPackage, such as ETRS89 / UTM 32N or British National Grid, and coordinates are rounded to 7 decimals, about 1 cm. If you need GeoJSON in meters for a GIS workflow, save it from QGIS instead; most web tools would place it wrong.

One GeoJSON file per layer

A GeoJSON file holds one FeatureCollection, so a GeoPackage with several vector layers gives one .geojson per layer, named after the layer and packed in a .zip. A GeoPackage with a single layer gives one .geojson named after the file. A layer that mixes points, lines and polygons stays in one file.

Field types become JSON values

Whole and decimal numbers stay numbers, booleans become true or false, and dates and times become text in ISO 8601 form such as 2026-05-14T09:30:00. Long field names and text are kept in full, unlike in a shapefile.

What is left out

Attribute tables without geometry, raster tiles and QGIS styles or projects stored in the GeoPackage are not converted; the status line names the skipped tables. GeoJSON is plain text and has no spatial index, so a large layer becomes a much bigger file than in the GeoPackage and loads slowly in a browser map.

About the formats

GeoPackage

GeoPackage is an open OGC standard from 2014 built on SQLite. It is the default format in QGIS and can hold many layers, any coordinate system and long field names in a single file.

  • One file can contain many vector layers and tables, and raster tiles.
  • No 10-character limit on field names, unlike shapefiles.
  • Stores the coordinate system of each layer inside the file, so there is no separate .prj.
  • Has no 2 GB size limit per layer, unlike the .shp and .dbf files of a shapefile.

GeoJSON

GeoJSON is a plain-text JSON format for geographic features, standardized as RFC 7946 in 2016. It is the native format of web maps such as Leaflet, MapLibre and Mapbox, and of many APIs.

  • Coordinates are WGS84 longitude, latitude (in that order).
  • Points, lines and polygons can be mixed in one file.
  • Properties can be any JSON value, with no limit on field name length.

Frequently asked questions

Is my GeoPackage uploaded?

No. GDAL runs in your browser as WebAssembly, and the GeoJSON is written on your own computer.

Can I convert only one layer?

Every vector layer is converted. Unzip the download and keep the .geojson files you need.

Why are the coordinates different from the GeoPackage?

GeoJSON is always in longitude and latitude on WGS84, so data in a projected system such as UTM or a national grid is reprojected. The places are the same; only the numbers change from meters to degrees.

Can I convert GeoJSON back to a GeoPackage?

Yes. The GeoJSON to GeoPackage converter puts one or more GeoJSON files into a single .gpkg, one layer per file, with typed fields.
