Convert SVG to PNG
Free, private and fast: everything runs in your browser and your SVG files are never uploaded.
SVG to PNG: why convert
An SVG is a set of drawing instructions, so it can be rendered sharp at any size, but many places only take pixels: slide decks, word processors, social networks, app stores, email signatures and most upload forms. Converting to PNG means deciding how many pixels you need, and that is the one setting here: the size from the SVG itself, two or four times that, or an exact width. The drawing is rendered fresh at that size, not scaled up from a small picture, so edges stay crisp, and the transparent background stays transparent. SVGs that only have a viewBox and no width or height are handled too. Your browser draws the SVG and writes the PNG, so files never leave your device. Fonts and images linked from other files cannot load in this mode, and the list warns you when an SVG uses them.
How to convert SVG to PNG
- Drop your .svg files in the box, or click to choose them.
- Choose the PNG size, 2× by default, or enter a width in pixels. The list shows the resulting size of each PNG.
- Click Convert to PNG and download the PNG, or a zip with all of them.
What changes when you convert
Pixels matter, DPI does not
A PNG has a width and a height in pixels; a DPI value is only a hint stored in the file about how large to print it. What decides sharpness is the pixel count. For a logo printed 5 cm wide at 300 pixels per inch you need about 590 pixels across, so choose that width rather than looking for a DPI setting. For screens, 2× the SVG's own size looks sharp on high-resolution displays.
SVGs without a width and height
Many icons and exported graphics only have a viewBox, for example viewBox="0 0 24 24". Browsers would then pick 300 × 150 pixels on their own; the converter instead uses the viewBox as the base size, so 24 × 24 at 1× and 48 × 48 at 2×. Sizes in inches, millimetres or points are converted at 96 pixels per inch, the CSS standard.
Linked fonts and images do not load
When a browser draws an SVG as an image, it does not fetch anything outside the file, for security reasons. Text set in a web font falls back to a font installed on your device, and images linked by address are left out. Fonts and images embedded in the SVG as data work. If text must look exact, convert it to outlines in your design program before exporting.
The background stays transparent
Areas the SVG does not paint are transparent in the PNG. That is what you want for logos on coloured slides, but a white background is not added; some viewers show transparency as black or a chequerboard.
Very large sizes
A canvas in the browser is limited in size; this page allows up to 16,384 pixels per side. Phones and tablets may fail earlier, so render poster-size PNGs on a computer.
About the formats
SVG
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is the W3C's XML format for vector drawings, a recommendation since 2001. Instead of pixels it stores shapes, paths, text and gradients as instructions, so an SVG stays sharp at any size. Logos, icons, charts and illustrations exported from Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape are often SVG.
- A plain text file that can be opened and edited in any text editor.
- Has no fixed pixel size: width, height and the viewBox only say how big it is drawn by default.
- Can link fonts and images from other files or websites, which then have to be available too.
- Opens in every browser, but many office programs, social networks and upload forms only take PNG or JPG.
PNG
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format from 1996 and the usual format for screenshots, logos, diagrams and images with transparency. Every pixel is stored exactly, so text and sharp edges stay crisp.
- Lossless: saving again never reduces quality.
- Supports full transparency (an alpha channel).
- Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Are my SVG files uploaded?
No. Your browser renders the SVG and creates the PNG on your device.
What size should my PNG be?
For a web page or slide, 2× the size it will be shown at. For print, multiply the printed width in inches by 300. Icons for apps and favicons usually have fixed sizes listed by the platform.
Why does the text in my PNG look different?
The SVG probably uses a web font that is linked rather than embedded, and the browser falls back to another font. Convert the text to paths in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma, or embed the font, and convert again.
Can I get a white background instead of transparent?
Not with a setting here. Add a white rectangle as the first element of the SVG, or place the PNG on white in an image editor.
Is the PNG still a vector graphic?
No. The PNG is made of pixels at the size you chose. Keep the SVG as the original and make a new PNG whenever you need another size.
