Convert GIF to PNG

Free, private and fast: everything runs in your browser and your GIF files are never uploaded.

GIF to PNG: why convert

GIF is still how many logos, icons, diagrams and old website graphics are stored, but a lot of software handles it poorly: slide programs may play it as an animation, editors flatten the palette, and some upload forms accept only PNG or JPG. Converting to PNG gives you a modern, lossless file with the same pixels and the same transparent areas, ready for editing, printing or a document. Drop one GIF or a whole batch, check the previews, and download a PNG, or a zip when there are several. An animated GIF becomes a PNG of its first frame; the tool marks those files so you know which ones moved.

How to convert GIF to PNG

  1. Drop your GIF files in the box, or click to choose them.
  2. Check the list. Animated GIFs are marked, because only the first frame is kept.
  3. Click Convert to PNG and download the PNG, or a zip with all of them.

What changes when you convert

Only the first frame of an animation

PNG has no animation that works everywhere, so an animated GIF is saved as a still picture of its first frame. If the frame you need comes later in the animation, a GIF editor or a video tool can export that frame instead.

The palette stays the same

A GIF has at most 256 colours. Converting to PNG keeps those exact colours; it cannot bring back colours or detail that were lost when the GIF was made, so a grainy photo GIF stays grainy.

Transparency carries over

Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG. GIF transparency has no soft edges, so the outline of a logo looks exactly as jagged or as smooth as it did before.

File size

The PNG stores full colour and transparency for every pixel instead of a 256-colour palette, so it is often larger than the GIF, especially for simple graphics. For a web page where size matters, WebP is usually the smaller choice.

About the formats

GIF

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still everywhere for short animations, stickers and simple web graphics. Every frame is limited to a palette of 256 colours, which suits logos and drawings but makes photos look grainy.

  • At most 256 colours per frame; photos get visible banding or dithering.
  • Transparency is all or nothing: a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque.
  • One file can hold many frames with their own delays, which is how GIF animations work.

PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format from 1996 and the usual format for screenshots, logos, diagrams and images with transparency. Every pixel is stored exactly, so text and sharp edges stay crisp.

  • Lossless: saving again never reduces quality.
  • Supports full transparency (an alpha channel).
  • Photos saved as PNG are usually several times larger than as JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the GIF and writes the PNG on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Is the conversion lossless?

Yes. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so the PNG looks the same as the first frame of the GIF.

Can I convert many GIFs at once?

Yes. Select or drop many at once, up to about 200 MB per batch; with more than one you get a zip with a PNG for each.

How can I tell whether a GIF is animated?

After you add it, the file list says "Animated GIF" and how many frames it has.
