AVIF converters
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) stores a picture compressed with AV1, the royalty-free video codec of the Alliance for Open Media, inside the same HEIF container that iPhones use for HEIC. Version 1.0 of the specification was published in 2019. Image CDNs and large websites serve AVIF because it usually gives smaller files than JPG or WebP at the same visual quality.

What to know about AVIF
- Opens in current Chrome, Firefox and Safari 16 or later; Edge added it only in version 121 (2024).
- Many desktop editors, office programs, upload forms and older phones still cannot open it.
- Supports transparency, 10 and 12-bit colour, HDR and animation.
- Can be lossy or lossless, but almost every AVIF on the web is lossy.
